ae We owe an apology to the writer of this beautiful collection of poems for not having been able to review it carlier, The volume before us is remarkable in many respects. Its author is a young Hindu lady, and a daughter of & Zemindar of the district of Pubna, now residing in Krishnagar. It contains several poetical pieces on a varicty of Subjects, but its value is considerably enhanced by the publication of a translation of couple of poems of Wordsworth and Byron, We have carefully perused this book and are glad to be able to say that the young anthoress has not only shown that she possesses a remarkable knowledge of the Bengalec language, but that she is also familiar with the works of the great English Pocts, Almost every piece which this book contains, is replete with sweetness, charming imagerieselegance of language, purity of thought and chasteness uf diction. The translations, though not always fair and litcral are enough to show that she under- stands the English language. There are two poems, howcver—one entitled the “Smile of an infaut” and the other “my Prayer” which struck us to be peculiarly good. In the former, the writer has shown a remar- kable descriptive power ; and in the latter, she has succossfully infused a great. deal of pathos, We are sure that if our young authoress worships the Muses as devotedly as she has ০0101000060 in her early life her literary career will be well worth imitating by the ladies of Bengal. In a country where the education of women is stillet is infant stage, the reviewers are supposed to be somewhat lenient in criticising books written by fair hands ; but we can assure the reader that in reviewing the book before us, we have not relaxed the canons of criticism a bit. It seldom falls to our lot to get an opportunity of reviewing a work of a genuine Hindu Lady ; and whenever we get such publications for revicw, wo find it very refreshing to do so. It is owing to this, that we have devoted a groat deal more apace to the book wader notice than we otherwise would have dune. Brahwo Public Opinion.
